While some may look at the game of soccer as just running around the field and trying to kick the ball into net, Charlie Divelbiss know there’s much more to being successful on the pitch as well as in everyday life.

“Running is definitely a physical challenge but there’s a mental approach to playing the game at a championship level,” explained the 2021 Hilldale senior who first began playing soccer when he was four years old. “You have to be aggressive and strategic at the same time to carry out your responsibilities.”

The play of the Hornets striker was part of record setting season for Hilldale as the Hornets advance to the Class 4A state semifinals with a 16-2 record.

“Charlie started the year playing midfield but once we moved him to striker it was a game changing move for success,” replied Hilldale coach Connor Schwab. “His skills gave our team a big body higher up the field to hold the ball and make scoring runs up top.”

Divelbiss, a co-captain on this year’s Hilldale squad scored five goals and five assists for the Hornets this spring. And according to Schwab was a team leader.

“Charlie is one of those guys everyone likes and everyone responds to his efforts.”

The impact to Hilldale’s soccer success earned Divelbiss a spot on the Class 4A boys All-State team and will play in the mid-summer classic coached by Schwab.

The hard work approach is something that Divelbiss he credits to the influence of his family. 

“My grandfather, I call him Pops, his actions made me aspire to be like him,” said Charlie. “Without question, my mom has always been my biggest fan.”

In addition to the All-State soccer honors, Divelbiss recently completed a two-year program at Indian Capital Technology Center.

“I’ve earned my 3G and 6G certifications through the welding program,” he said. “I’m going to work for a local construction company and see where that takes me. I started the Monday after graduation.”

Whether on the soccer pitch or on the job, Charlie Divelbiss continues to prove there’s only one true way to earn success.

“Hard work is the only way to make it.”
