OFFENSE

It’s a do-over year for the Hulbert Riders as they gladly put 2020 in the rearview mirror. It’s starts with a new coach as Ty Pilgrim takes over the reins of the program and issues a challenge to his team. “This is a brand-new season! The Corona Virus year 2020 presented so many unprecedented challenges and whittled our team down to 14 players at one point. So our entire focus this year is on recovery and re-establishing the proud Hulbert Rider tradition,”

There will also be a new signal caller for the Riders working out of the spread formation as Muskogee transfer Walker Eaton (6-1, 168, Sr.) takes over the quarterback duties. “Walker is a young man that works football year-round, going to all the camps and even has 1-on-1 instruction from great coaches like Hal Mumme for example, “said Pilgrim. “We expect his senior year to be his breakout season so he can move on and play at the college level.”

Hulbert returns five starters on offense with three of them being talented receivers for Eaton to target. Juniors Trenton Hess (5-9, 140), who also plays baseball and wrestles, and Tristan Collins (6-0, 160) along with senior Ithyan Johnson (5-10, 155) provide a solid group with some experience in hauling in the pigskin. There’s also help on the offensive line in returners Jonas Brewer (5-11, 253, So.) and Trey West (5-11, 221, Sr.). “Jonas is an excellent and talented lineman who is also part of the USA Football program. He was able to start as a freshman and he should have a great career as a Rider,” said Pilgrim. “Trey is one of our captains this year. His dedication and work ethic in our program is unrivaled the past two seasons. His senior leadership will be vitally important to us this year.”

DEFENSE

“We pride ourselves in sound, fundamental defensive football here at Hulbert,” is how Pilgrim describes what to expect from the Riders on this side of the ball. Though some of those mentioned on offense will probably see action both ways, Pilgrim has some other returning players he will draw on as well. Lane Gordon (6-4, 218, Sr.) will be an imposing figure at one of the defensive end spots while Daniel Hair (6-2, 194, Sr.) will man the other end spot. Anchoring the linebacking crew will be Wyatt Thurber (6-0, 180, Sr.) while Nathan Dissler (5-5, 130, So.) and Archer Skaggs (5-7, 140, So.) will patrol the secondary for Hulbert. Six home games including the first three of the first four might help this crew get a good jump on the season. As life starts to return to a sense of normalcy, the Rider nation will be hoping to see if some of that Rider pride resurfaces for the 2021 campaign.
