OFFENSE

Finding new skill players will be the big challenge on this side of the ball for coach Bobo Daniels as the Eagles resume a more normal routine in preparation for the 2021 season. The biggest question mark will probably be at quarterback where the Eagles will have to replace two-year starter Kolby Adams. Keegan Burgess (5-11, 150, Sr.) appears to be the candidate to run Daniels spread offense. A big plus for him and the rest of the offense will be a line with some size and experience. Parker Thomas (6-2, 200, So.), Jake Hopper (5-11, 300, Sr.), Junior Walls (5-11, 280, Jr.) and Kaynen Powell (6-2, 160, Sr.) all saw varying degrees of playing time last year and have good size as well. Another piece of the puzzle on offense will be Mateo Terriquez (5-7, 175. Sr.) who is versatile enough to play at either wide receiver or as the running mate to Burgess in the backfield. “On offense we want to play fast and physical while controlling the clock and limiting the opponents’ possessions,” said Daniels.

DEFENSE

The Morris defense may have to carry the offense along in the early going as the Eagles return seven starters from last year to execute the 4-3 look. Trey Daniels (5-11, 170, So.) and Erik Macklin (6-1, 200, Jr.) were among the leading tacklers last season at the inside linebacker positions. “Trey started all seven games last year and sets the defense for us. He leads by example, and we expect him to continue to grow in his role for us,” said Daniels. “Erik is a hard worker who never complains. He’s a weight room warrior and holds teammates accountable. He’s got good size and speed and we’re expecting big things from him this year at linebacker.” Terriquez will join those two on the outside while Thomas will anchor the defensive front along with Gage Adkins (6-1, 200, So.) while Burgess will be the main lockdown man in the secondary. “Our goal on defense will be get to the ball fast and create takeaways. Up front we want to be disruptive, freeing our linebackers to make plays,” said Daniels.
