OFFENSE

While the names may change the expectations of winning football remain the focus for the Wolverines in 2021. The offensive lineup returns four proven starters as well as a group of experienced athletes ready to step into the bright lights on Friday night. “We’ll throw the ball off the run game,” explained head coach Gary Willis who begins his sixth season as leader of the pack. “Talent at running back has always been a stable of this program.” The optimism of the ground game revolves around the skills of DeSean Mays (5-11, 170, Jr.). DeSean’s speed and agility resulted in picking up 11.5 yards per carry last year which will allow the Wolverines big play potential this fall. Diego Ramos (6-3, 180, Jr.) will direct the pro-gun style offense at quarterback where he tossed 12 touchdowns a year ago in limited action. Xavin Lackey (6-1, 230, Sr.) provides a dual threat potential at tight end or splitting time at fullback with Gage Carlton (5-8, 185, Jr.). Vian will look to wide receivers Fisher Brooks (6-1, 170, Sr.), Dakota Briggs (6-0, 165, Sr.) and Luis Hernandez to add to the big play potential of the passing game. Returning starters Dylan Sanders (5-11, 245, Sr.) and Laken Vann (5-10, 225, Sr.) will anchor the aggressive front with added muscle to the offensive front expected from Ethan Locust (6-0, 300, Sr.), Nic Scoggins (5-10, 230, Jr.) and Marshall Ross (6-3, 240, Jr.). “We’re a more experienced lineup even with just four returning starters,” said Willis. “Our kids know how to play fast and physical.”

DEFENSE

The purple and gold defense will also have newcomers in the starting lineup with only four veterans returning from the 9-win season in 2020.  The anchor of the defense will be VYPE Top 100 pick Xavin Lackey, who has drawn multiple D-I college offers after making more the 200 tackles the last two years as a starting linebacker including 79 stops plus nine sacks in 2020. The 3-4 alignment welcomes Gage Carlton and Destry Bethel (6-0, 220, Jr.) to solidify linebacker play while Dylan Sanders will bring pressure from the defensive front. The Wolverines have the speed and attacking style play of Diego Ramos, Luis Hernandez and DeSean Mays to create turnovers in the secondary. “Our defensive game plan will be simple, just play sound fundamental technique and play with an aggressive approach on every play,” Willis said. “Defense has always been a mainstay of Vian football and these kids will continue that tradition with their fast and physical disruptive style of play.” Altogether Willis says the outlook remains the same on both sides of the line. “Just play VIAN football.”
