WOLVERINES READY FOR HOOPS SUCCESS

BOYS

Coach John Mays

20-21 Record: 11-9

Vian is under the direction of new coach John Mays this season and while graduation claimed four of the top six players off the Wolverine team, the two starters returning will provide a spark for a large and talented junior class,

“Xavin Lackey (6-2, Sr.) and Diego Ramos (6-3, Jr.) were our leading scorers and rebounders last year so they will have to lead this young but talented group of underclassmen,” said Mays.

Lackey was second in scoring at 10 points per game, led in rebounds with seven per game as well as blocked shots, field goal percentage and was third in assists. Mays is impressed with Lackey’s inside/outside game and high energy. Ramos was the leading scorer with 11 points a game while pulling in five boards a contest. Another returning player is Yonsi Grass (5-10, So.) who was a role player last year but should see much more action this season. The only other senior on the team is Fysher Brooks (5-11) who Mays describes as a hard worker who never complains and is the ultimate team player. Other juniors looking for more varsity time this year for the Wolverines will be K’den Richardson (6-0), Elijah Stewart (6-1), Desean Mays (6-1) and Blake Donaldson (5-9).

GIRLS

Coach: Tina Ramos

20-21 Record: 13-12

The Lady Wolverines return three senior starters that began coming into their own late last year so the 21-22 season promises to be a successful one for Vian. Greenlee Wells (5-9, Sr.) is the player to watch on the floor for the Lady Wolverines. She averaged 13.5 points and five rebounds a game last season and her versatility should be a big asset for Vian.

“Greenlee can play all five positions on the floor with the skills to take over a game with her ability to shoot and play post. Intensity and motivation are always consistent when she is on the court.”

Greenlee will get help from seniors Tayden Locust who averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds a game last season and Isabella Garrison who averaged 8 points a game last year. Also expected to make more of a mark this year is Maisie Wells.

An unsung hero is Harlee Carlton who saw lots of time off the bench last year should be more of a factor for the Lady Wolverines.

“We’re still very athletic and will continue pushing an up-tempo pace. We’ve gained a big group of freshmen that are driven and fearless that will challenge our upperclassmen at every turn,” stated Ramos.

VIAN WRESTLING TAKES TO THE MAT

Energy is building in the wrestling room as Vian enters the season with cause for continuing the tradition of winning on the mat. Coach Alvie Killingsworth ladder of talent includes only two seniors as well as an eager group of freshmen on the boys squad while there are a pair of top notch performers in the girls circle that includes two state placers. Taya Hunt (137) enters her junior season after reaching the state finals last season along with sophomore Avery Richey (127) who claimed a bronze medal as a freshman joined by a spirited Jadence Crow (107). The lineup for the boys includes Jordan Morris (106), John Kubalack (113), Gunner Richer (120), Connor Flynn (132), Joseph Krauter (145), Tristan Wiley (152), Peyton Johnson (160), Cash Collins (170, Lane Jameson (195) and Nic Scoggins (220).
