While her role is a little different this year, the overall goal for Pocola senior Mika Scott is the same-get the Lady Indians back to the state basketball tournament. They got a taste last year when they made it to the Big Dance before losing to eventual state champion Howe. But this year Scott is the lone senior on the team and she’s moving to the point guard spot with a little more responsibility. However, coach Mark McKenzie, like Scott a native of Pocola, isn’t concerned.

“I’ve been around Mika and her family since she was born. She puts in a lot of work to be a successful player. She not only has the basketball skills but is one of the best kids overall that I’ve ever coached in my 28 years. She’s like having a coach on the court to help get our younger kids in the right spots on the floor.”

Mika, who has committed to play college ball at Northeastern State next year, comes by her love for basketball naturally.

“My dad was a coach and so I’ve been in the gym since I was little and I’ve been around basketball my whole life,” said Scott who also plays softball, is in the National Honor Society, student council, the gifted and talented program, is taking concurrent college classes and is in the running to be class valedictorian.

Scott realizes there’s a little more responsibility on her this year but feels that the experience of going to state last year will be a help in her leadership role.

“I think making state has helped as a leader in being able to show the others what it takes to get there. As a leader I try to have a positive attitude and set a good example for the girls and encourage them,” said the four-year starter.

Off the court and ball diamond, Mika likes to hang out with friends and family and is active in her church, Life Church in Fort Smith.

The Lady Indians are well on their way to realizing their goal of returning to state as they are undefeated through the first half of the season and ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A-their highest ranking since 2008.
