OFFENSE

As Phil McWilliams begins his second year at the helm of the Haskell Haymakers, there are lots of reasons to be really optimistic about the 2022 season. On the offense one of those reasons is the return of quarterback Brannon Westmoreland (6-5, 190, Sr.), a dual-threat QB who passed for 1500 yards and 15 touchdowns and ran for six more scores last year.

“Brannon is the team leader and has the physical size, arm strength and runs a 4.7-40 to lead the offense to success and make defenses play the whole field,” said McWilliams,

The receiving corps is also experienced with Lane Mann (6-2, 170, Sr.) and Lucas King (5-7, 150, Jr.) both of whom had over 250 receiving yards last season. Opening the holes up front in the spread offense for Westmoreland will be Briar Payne (6-3, 270, Jr.) and Junior Faul (6-2, 220, Sr.). McWilliams also has high hopes for freshman Ryker Porter (6-3, 265) for help on the line.

DEFENSE

Haskell returns seven starters to the defense led by Faul who had 75 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and six sacks last year. “Junior has gained about 30 pounds this year and plays fast and physical at defensive end,” said McWilliams. “He forces double teams and makes it hard to run on his side of the field.” Payne will set up at nose guard where had 12 TFLs and three sacks last season while Peewee Jones (5-7, 140, Jr.) gives anything but small effort at linebacker. King, who recorded 25 tackles last year, and Mann will be the stoppers in the secondary and Porter will assume a spot in the defensive line of the 3-4 attack. In a mixed blessing, the Haymakers drop to Class A this year which might be a benefit, but it also means preparing for a whole new cast of district opponents in District A-8.
