OFFENSE

The heartbreak of a second round setback in the Class A playoffs has created an inferno of offseason preparation for the Pirates in 2022 who have totaled 46 wins in the five seasons since Brandon Tyler became captain of the ship in 2017. The multi-I formation offense returns 10 starters from last season that averaged 338 yards per contest resulting in 47.4 points per game. Two-time VYPE Top 100 standout Gunner Dozier (6-2, 205, Sr.) returns to lead the offensive assault after he raced to the end zone 23 times while rushing for 1562 yards. The ground game success will be complimented by efforts of Jackson Duke (5- 11, 180, Sr.) who averaged 11.8 yards per carry in 2021 and toed through 29-31 PAT attempts. Noah Cooper (6-2, 195, Jr.) will fill the one vacancy on the offensive starting lineup at quarterback and when the ball goes in the air Cooper will count upon Blue Steward (5-10, 175, Sr.) to make sure handed receptions. The muscle and mobility of four-year starter Gabe Dozier (6-2, 250, Sr.) and three-year veterans Garrett Douthit (6-3, 270, Sr.) and Nick Wolf (6-0, 270, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line efforts along with Cas Moore (6-1, 260, Sr.) and Layne Ward (5-11, 220, Jr.).

DEFENSE

Like their offense, the Pirates have the benefit of experience with 10 starters returning to their 11-man gang tackling defensive efforts that held their opponents to an average of 10.1 points per game including limiting the eight foes to six points or less. Dayne Perryman (5-10, 190, Sr.) who recorded 86 tackles including nine for minus yardage and Alex Hallum (5-10, 160, Sr.) who charted 65 stops return to anchor the 4-2-5 defensive alignment at linebacker. The Pirates secondary who grabbed 13 pass interceptions a year ago has plenty of experience and highlight reel playmakers including Keigan Reed (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Jackson Duke who each grabbed four interceptions joining forces with Tyler Lane (5-9, 160, Sr.) whose field vision and quick reactions resulted in 73 tackles last year. The Pirates have size, strength and quickness in their defensive front including Wyatt Marrel (6-0, 195, Sr.) who punished opposing quarterbacks with 21 sacks playing alongside Gabe Dozier, Nick Wolf, Cas Moore and Layne Ward. “The expectations are very high with us returning 10 starters on both sides of the line of scrimmage,” said Tyler. “These kids know what it takes to win, on and off the field and I’m confident that if we can stay healthy, Gore Pirates football will be exciting to watch on Friday nights.”
