OFFENSE

Deep playoff runs are just a matter of fact for the Vian Wolverines. In the seven years that Gary Willis has been at the helm of the Wolverines, they have advanced to at least the state quarterfinals every year and 2022 may be another chapter in that legacy. Vian certainly has the talent and experience at the skill positions to do it. Case in point, quarterback Diego Ramos (6-3, 185, Sr.) who has 27 touchdown tosses in his two-years as the signal caller, passed for nearly 1,500 yards last season, and already has several DI baseball offers in his pocket. Another talent on the offense is running back/slot back DeSean Mays (5-11, 165, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 pick, who had 27 touchdowns last season and gained nearly 1,700 yards rushing. The heir apparent to that job, Masyn Wright (5-11, 180, Fr.) whom Willis says has a chance to be special, will also carry the pill. The line will be in the hands of a couple of returning heavyweights in Nic Scoggins (5-10, 240, Sr.) and Marshal Ross (6-4, 290, Sr.). Willis will run a west coast-style offense and capitalize on what the defense gives him.

DEFENSE

The Wolverines 3-4 defensive philosophy is easy to understand. “Keep it simple. Play as fast as possible. Win the turnover battle,” according to Willis. This may be the side of the ball where the Wolverines will need some help with the graduation of stellar linebacker Xavin Lackey. A lot of that expectation will fall on Gage Carlton (5-8, 175, Sr.). Ramos will return to the secondary along with Wright, Mays and freshman Michael Polecat (5- 8, 160) while Ross will be the main man in the Wolverines defensive line creating havoc for opposing offenses. Vian will face s host of new faces in District 2A-5 this year with Okemah, Henryetta, Sequoyah Tahlequah, Prague and Warner replacing Cascia Hall, Spiro, Panama, Heavener and Pocola. The Wolverines will find out early where they stand with games against 2021 Class 2A state finalist Washington and the annual showdown with always-powerful Eufaula to kickoff this year’s campaign.
