Sallisaw’s Ellie Martin – “Talk of the Tailgate” presented by Taco Bueno

It’s a fact…in Oklahoma’s cities and towns, high school sports are a constant source of conversation as social media chats and the coffee shop discussions evolve from the sports teams in the community. In Sallisaw, the Black Diamonds are continuously the “talk of the tailgate” no matter the sport. And for Ellie Martin, a senior cheerleader, it’s all about school spirit.

“School spirit is the base energy source in Sallisaw for young and old alike,” confirmed Ellie. “And, as a cheerleader, school spirit provides the excitement and the emotion for each student to bring their best everyday.”

As a senior, Ellie welcomes the challenges of being a game changer by promoting the success of the Black Diamonds on and off the fields of competition.

“With my teammates on the cheer squad as well as with the students and fans, I love it,” she said with a smile. “A game changer is someone than can altar the way things are done by using their attitude to spark change. My positive outlook and fortitude empowers me to be a game changer in cheer and in everyday life.”

Martin’s individual results are impressive. Ranked in the Top-10 percent of her class with a 4.0 GPA, Ellie is a member of the National Honor Society and helped the Black Diamonds cheer team earn the OSSAA Academic State Champions award. Martin’s impact for success also makes a difference with Sallisaw girls basketball and track teams along with the school’s leadership team. Because of her school pride and influence among others at Sallisaw, Ellie was chosen as Homecoming Queen for 2022.

“She’s a quiet but powerful voice in the classroom and on the playing fields,” said Robbie Martin, cheer coach at Sallisaw. “She definitely leads by example.”

Ellie says its all about making character count for something good.

“Character is how an individual presents themself. Staying positive, working hard, and doing the right things are the character traits I try to portray everyday.”

Her non-stop positive energy is a trait that Ellie credits the influence of her mother’s everyday example.

“She is the most selfless person I know, she doesn’t stop until everyone around her is happy,” replied Ellie. Along with that, she is so involved in our community. She wants to leave everything better than she found it an will do whatever she needs to do to make a difference and change the atmosphere into a better place. I want to be like this, I want to take charge and be the one that makes a difference.”

For those who know Ellie Martin, there’s no denying her impact for making a better day for everyone by following a personal creed.

“My parents have always told me I can control my attitude and effort, and to pray continuously. Anytime I have a bad practice, game, or competition they remind me of this,” Ellie said with conviction. “I hope that my legacy will leave a footprint for happiness and success. I want to be remembered as a hard-working good student who was an encourager to all.”
