Muskogee Roughers Girls Basketball Preview – Presented by York Street Tire

Coach: Bryan Bunch

21-22 Record: 2-16

The 2022-23 season for the Rougher begins with a young and energetic roster and a new head coach as Bryan Bunch slides into the first chair. With three seniors as the foundation for a leadership, Muskogee will look to perimeter scoring threat Bianca McVay (5-8, G, Sr.), Jakayla Swanson (5-8, G, Sr.) a defensive specialist that can also score and Zhyan Mayes (5-6, G, Sr.) whose quickness and energy is contagious among teammates to initiate a turnaround in the record book.

“Those three will play major roles in the success of our team through their play and their leadership,” explained Bunch who seeks to instill positivity and confidence with this year’s team.

The youthful Roughers will get a boost from the play of a pair of sophomores Malaysia Burton (5-8, G, So.) who Bunch calls a game changer talent, Aniyah Thomas (5-10, F, So.) who paced the rebounding totals for last year’s freshman squad and D’Mya Brown (5-3, G, So.) whose team first endeavors add to the desires of her teammates to succeed. Inspired by their work ethic and the WE is greater than me approach, Bunch looks for depth and results from Emiah Sanders (6-0, F, Sr.), Nyia Green (5-6, G, Jr.), Jordan Campbell (5-10, F, So.), Jaslyn Gandy (5-4, G, So.), Eleesha Lee (5-10, F, So.), Amyah Drake (6-0, F, So.) and a pair of freshmen Emeson Toney (5-3, G, Fr.) and NyAsia Ivy (5-6, G, Fr.).

“This group is confident in each other and are committed to growing together, ready to compete,” said Bunch. After taking part in the Tahlequah and Putnam City tournaments, the Roughers are scheduled to play their first game inside Rougher Village on January 13th against Broken Arrow.
