McCurtain Bulldogs Girls Basketball Preview – Presented by Compassion Home Care

Coach: Bryan Schlekeway
21-22 Record: 21-5

The Lady Bulldogs have no love lost when it comes to another group of Bulldogs from Whitesboro. The Lady Bulldogs from LeFlore County handed McCurtain both of their losses in the playoffs last year-the second one being a two-point heart breaker that denied McCurtain a trip to the state tournament. But graduation took most of the stars of that team leaving behind an inexperienced crew to carry on this season. “We’re going to be young and inexperienced with not a lot of depth,” said head coach Bryan Schlekeway. “We’re just looking to get better as the season goes along and surprise some people when the playoffs come around.”

A lot of what happens in the 2022 season will fall on the lone senior, guard Bailey Bennett. “She has the most returning experience and averaged 6.2 points per game last year. She can shoot the 3 or go to the rim. We need her to be a leader for our younger players,” said Schlekeway. With the lack of a strong senior group, a lot will fall on the remaining juniors in Faith Rensediz (5-5), Sydnie Tackett (5-8) and Cadence Myers (6-0). The only sophomore on the squad is Jerica Baker, a good athlete and potentially great defender according to the head coach. A trio of freshmen may also have a chance to make a mark on this inexperienced squad led by Kaylee Culwell (5-8) who Schlekeway says has a good all-around game and after adjusting to the high school game, should develop into a nice player over the next four years along with Avrie Ford and Elizabeth Smith.
