Leadership is a process that maximizes the efforts of others toward achievement of a specified goal. Common traits of leaders in high school sports include communication, enthusiasm and accountability. And even though she’s only a freshman, Shay Grissom is determined to be a game changer on and off the field.

“Leadership means doing the right thing even when no one else is watching and then taking responsibility for your actions,” explained Grissom who stands tall by example while tiptoeing to stand 5-foot-2. “I strive to communicate on and off the field, do the little things others don’t want to do and always encourage others to do their best.”

Whether she’s playing second base or the outfield, Grissom takes the field for the Roughers softball team with a special purpose.

“The best part of my game is communicating with teammates. Encouraging words are very important and so is hustle,” exclaimed Grissom.

“Shay-Shay” as friends and family know her, began playing ball at age four before competing in softball for the first time when she was eight years old. She credits her energy and enthusiasm to the example set by her parents.

“My dad (Steve) was so selfless and always thinking of others and my mom (Andi) through her determination to succeed, can do anything. Together they have inspired me to be the person I am today.”

Grissom takes nothing for granted especially in the classroom where she owns a 3.85 GPA and enjoys being on the high school dance team. Whatever her cause, she accepts with a smile the responsibility of being a Muskogee Rougher.

“Wearing the Muskogee uniform requires me to hold myself accountable and live my life and make decisions based upon morals and positive personality traits,” Grissom said with commitment. “Anything I do or say, I not only represent myself but my school, my team and my family.”

Knowing there will be days in sports and in life when obstacles seem too tall to overcome, Grissom finds added encouragement to carry on.

“The best advice I’ve received is my favorite Bible verse. ‘My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever’ – Psalms 73:26. When I get down on myself or struggle with my game, I use this verse to remind myself that I can do anything and He’s not giving up on me so I won’t give up either.”

Without question, Shay Grissom is a welcomed leader who maximizes her every effort and encourages others to do the same.
