Poteau’s Dax Collins – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Sans Bois Hospice

Dax Collins has done it all at Poteau High School. He plays football, basketball, baseball, runs track and powerlifts. And he’s just a sophomore. Though he excels in all three team sports, football is where he got his start and where he sees his future.

“I started playing bandit ball, which is our youth football league, in second grade and I was already playing up the with third graders and since then all I’ve ever really wanted to do is play football.”

On the gridiron, Dax is a running back for the Pirates where he experienced an early highlight in his high school career this school year.

“I’ll always remember our semifinal game against Tuttle this year. On the second play of the game, I took one 70 yards for a touchdown and then had another 70-yard TD later in the game. It was just a bummer that we lost the game.”

Dax has admired the play of Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey over the years.

“I like the attitude he brings and he’s a good example of how to play the game,” said Collins.

Dax’s baseball skills are pretty valuable as well according to his coach Ryan Dill.

“He’s a great talent that can bunt, hit with power, steals bases, and can track down anything close to him in the outfield. He hit .419 this year with seven homers and 45 RBIs. He was named to the all-tournament team in the LeFlore County Tournament and was the district newcomer of the year last year.”

In baseball Dax likes the play of Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto and his basketball go-to pro is Russell Westbrook.

As the school year closes out, Dax’s thoughts turn again to his favorite sport of football. His junior class will be the strongest this coming year which means it will be time to step up even more.

“We have a few seniors that will need to step up, but my junior class will probably provide the leadership for the team. I’ll want to do my part by providing a good example of hard work and strong character for the younger kids.”
