OFFENSE
Head coach Mike Burdge has 36 years of experience under his belt and in 2022 begins a new tenure as he takes over for the Cave Springs Hornets. He brings his wing-T offensive philosophy to Cave Springs and wants to have a balanced offensive approach. “Most often when you hear of a balanced attack you think of a 50-50 run/pass attack,” Burdge said. “That’s not what we really want. We’re looking more at a 70-30 run/ pass approach.” The idea is to establish the run early and take advantage of passing opportunities as they come. Isaiah Sam (5-9, 170, Jr.) will look to lead the offense. Sam is an excellent athlete that can run the ball out of the backfield and has the ability to throw. Sam may take snaps at quarterback this year, however, he will have to win the job in fall camp. Either at quarterback or running back, expect Sam to be a big time playmaker on offense this season for the Hornets.
DEFENSE
The Hornets will look to run a 3-2 base defense. “If we have the speed, we’ll be playing man coverage in the secondary,” Burdge said. “But we’ll use zone coverages as necessary. We want to bring pressure on the quarterback and force turnovers without being exposed over the top.” Lineman Kelby Sam (6-1, 280, So.) impressed his freshman year with great size and strength and looks to have an even more impressive sophomore season on both offensive and defensive fronts. He and cousin Isaiah should make their presence known for Cave Springs on both sides of the ball this year. Burdge is excited to begin the new season in Cave Springs with the Hornets and see what his team can do.
