OFFENSE

It’s a good news-bad news situation for the Panama Razorbacks as they enter the 2022 season. The good news is that they have a lot of guys back that saw playing time last year. But the bad news is that they are still very young in spite of that with just one senior on the roster. Braxton Biernacki (5-11, 160, Jr.) who split the quarterbacking duties last year with Tyler Simkins (5- 10, 160, So.) will take over the signal calling duties full time this season with Simkins moving to running back. Biernacki passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns last season while Simkins rushed as a quarterback for 147 yards. Also carrying the mail for the Razorbacks will be Caleb Brewer (5-8, 181, So.) whose strength will be a big asset for Panama. “Caleb was a state champion powerlifter his freshman year and shows his strength on both sides of the ball. He’s also a straight A student that’s always willing to help others,” said new coach Chris Ford. The lone senior on the squad is a good one in four-year starting lineman Bryson Honeycutt (5-11, 220). “Bryson’s leadership will be a fundamental part of our team success and on top of that he always treats people the way you should and is a fantastic teammate,” said Ford. He’ll be mentoring Jay Skelton (6-0, 250, So.) on the fine art of pancake blocks. Another player that is expected to find a place on the Panama offense is Talon Fairless (5-10, 140, So.). Ford will use a Wing-T variation offense with a mindset of three yards for three plays and go for it on fourth and one.

DEFENSE

There are seven staters back on the defensive side of the ball which appears may be a bit stronger than the offense in the early going. Upfront, look for Honeycutt and Gavin McKinney (6-0, 205, So.) to anchor the front of Ford’s 4-3 defense. The second line of defense at linebackers will be comprised of Brewer, Brody Clark (6-1, 190, So.) and Hagon Rahm (5-11, 200, So.) and in the secondary look for Simkins, Fairless, Nelson Liddy (5-9, 145, jr.) and Mason Cameron (6-0, 150, Jr.). The Razorbacks are a sophomore-heavy team in hopes of a better outing in 2022. “We’re trying to return to the tradition of the playoffs from the past. We’re young but determined to find a way to win,” said Ford. Panama will drop down to Class A this season and be in District A-8 with Central Sallisaw, Pocola, Canadian, Gore, Haskell, and Porter.
