Morris Eagles Boys Basketball Preview – Presented By Impact Rehab and Wellness

Boys

Coach: Brandon Heath

21-22 Record 19-9

Morris head coach Brandon Heath and assistant coach Chance Johnston are developing a style that plays to the strengths of the Eagles roster, placing an emphasis on playing as a team and not five individuals. “Adjusting to new roles with a new coach and system will be key for us. We are overall small, so we must buy into team rebounding. Once we figure out roles and the system, we will be a dangerous team come late February,” said coach Heath. Tucker Kelsey (5-11, Sr.) will lead the team from his guard position. Kelsey averaged 8.8 points per game and will knock down shots from the perimeter or finish around the rim. Cody Smith (6-1, Sr.) is another scorer at the forward spot. Last season Smith averaged 9.9 points per game. Coach Heath said Smith is a crucial part of the team’s success.

“Cody will be a big key to our success this year. He will score from inside and outside as well as have the assignment of containing the other team’s better players,” coach Heath said. Ryan Benavidez (6-3, Sr.) will see time in the paint where his size will be beneficial on the boards. Also look for Jerrik Raines (6-2, Sr.) down low as well. Both players could be huge keys to victory for the Eagles this season. Dakota Chaney (5-8, So.) is an exciting young player at guard. Coach Heath is excited to see Chaney develop into a go-to player for the Eagles.

“Dakota will have to come in and play immediately for us and has a lot of potential. If he grows into that potential this year we could have a very successful season,” Heath said. Several players will see time on the floor this season as the Eagles look to keep legs fresh. Race Casey (5-11, Jr.), Xavier Harjo (5-7, So.) and Jaylen Zachary (5-6, Jr.) are all expected to contribute this season. The tournament schedule is a challenging one with the Eagles playing in the Haskell, Warner and Creek Nation tournaments. The schedule also includes road game against Stigler, Beggs, Okmulgee, Preston, Henryetta, Eufaula, and Kellyville.
