Vian Wolverines Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Vian Family Dental Clinic

BOYS
Coach: John Mays

21-22 Record 9-14

After a late start resulting from the success in the football playoffs last year, Vian put together its talents in a successful way following the Christmas holiday. And while the same delayed start to the season may result again in 2022-23, the Wolverines will have plenty of experienced and competitive players lacing up their basketball shoes expecting to find success. “We return a lot of veterans from a team that was very competitive last year,” said head coach John Mays. “We have six seniors that will play giving us an older team. Altogether, we have a bunch that will play hard. I expect good things from all of them.” Last year’s two leading scorers return led by Diego Ramos (6-2, F, Sr.) who averaged 12 points and 7-plus rebounds a year ago, has the athleticism that allows him to effectively play any position on the court. K’den Richardson (5-10, G, Sr.) whose only sport is basketball averaged 12 points and distributed four assists per contest.

The quickness and vision of DeSean Mays (6-0, F, Sr.) allows the multi-sport athlete the ability to create game changing moments on either end of the floor in addition to averaging eight points and six rebounds per game. The only junior on this year’s roster, Y’onsi Gass (5-10, G, Jr.) who averaged 9.1 points per game an 4.0 assists is the type of player that does all the dirty work in addition to making plays off the dribble. Mason Wright (5-11, Fr.) is a player with all the tools to play all five positions on the court. The invaluable efforts of last year’s sixth man Elijah Stewart (6-1, F, Sr.) is the type of player that brings energy and skill to the hardwood in addition to maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Mays also expects productive minutes from Blake Donaldson (5-10, G, Sr.), Marshall Ross (6-3, C, Sr.) and Michael Polecat (5-7, G, Fr.). “When we finally all get together, this is a talented and enjoyable group to watch play,” said Mays who starts his second year in the front seat as head coach of the Wolverines.
