Hulbert’s Jonas Brewer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by ICTC

Too often in football, the guys “in the trench” are too many times overlooked. But for Jonas Brewer, a member of the offensive and defensive front lines at Hulbert High School, it’s more about getting the job done right on the gridiron, as well as in the classroom at Indian Capital Technology Center in Tahlequah, where the Hulbert junior is enrolled in the Electrician Assistants program.

“For me it’s not about the recognition, but more about just protecting the quarterback so that the play results for positive yards,” Brewer said. “As an electrician, your first thought is to protect your customers by doing things the right way and meeting their needs.”

Doing his job right and with quality is what gains Brewer accolades from his mentor at ICTC.

“Jonas always takes care of the details. He’s focused on job quality,” said Jesse Stillwell, the electrical assistant program instructor at ICTC-Tahlequah. “From my own experience as a journeyman, there’s no substitute for teamwork with your crew. Jonas takes his work seriously and because of that, he’s a leader on our team.”

According to Stillwell, Brewer and the other students enrolled in the two-year program can learn the essentials needed to handle the demands of the multiple fields of opportunity as an electrician.

“The Electrician Assistants program gives students like Jonas a hands-on learning environment while mastering safety, theory and the basics of residential wiring and circuitry in year one and then the essentials of commercial and industrial electrical work in their second year,” confirmed the program’s leader. “They’ll finish with not only an electrical apprentice license but also CPR and OSHA-10 certification that’s needed for industrial jobs plus training on how to operate a forklift.”

Stillwell adds that Brewer has a special talent that will make him successful no matter what career choice he makes going forward.

“Jonas has the work ethic that every employer wants,” Stillwell said. “In this industry, when you can show up on time, be dependable with a good work ethic focused on the quality of the job, success follows. That’s Jonas.”

With all of the necessary tools at his fingertips, Brewer knows he’s got a special opportunity at ICTC in order to advance his skills and make him a desired employee.

“I’m a hands-on learner who just likes doing things.  But then having the books to make sure I’m doing things right adds to my confidence that I can handle any job,” said Brewer, who also wrestles at Hulbert. “It’s like making the plays on Friday night but also having our scouting report to help me prepare for the competition. It’s my chance to grab the keys and open the doors to my future.  Because of the programs at ICTC, you can learn a career that will serve you for life.”
