As the shooting guard on this year’s girls basketball team, Harlie Chesser strives to find success chanting two words, “Maintain Belief.”
“In all things, you must maintain belief in yourself. You must not let the trials, circumstances, and people take your personal views from you,” said the Warner High School junior. “If you do not believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to think; often because they see your lack of faith.”
For Chesser, who is always on the go as a member of the track, slowpitch and fastpitch softball teams, as well as a cheerleader, the fast-pace schedule affords an opportunity for leadership.
“Leadership involves being accountable, holding yourself and your teammates to the commitment, and then leading by example as a positive influence outside the gym and maintaining school work,” she said.
Her efforts are creating positive results for the Lady Eagles’ basketball team, according to her coach.
“Harlie is kind, funny, helpful, and encouraging to her teammates. She is a great all-around kid,” said Mindi Peters. “As soon as she steps on the court, Harlie makes a big impact for us with her quick hands and feet on defense. She is also big on the offensive end with her ability to knock down the 3 and attack the basket.”
The opportunity for making a difference is a choice that Chesser cherishes.
“I think of myself as driven, devoted and passionate about everything I do,” Chesser said. “Knowing that people are watching you, even when you don’t realize it, challenges me to be a good role model and holding myself accountable and taking responsibility. My aim is to express myself by using the talents God gave me and play the game through Him.”
Chesser knows that everyone needs support, including herself, and credits one of her teammates for lending a helping hand.
“Jordan Jackson has been my teammate since I can remember,” she said. “Even when she may be struggling, she makes sure that I’m not getting down on myself. I can always count on her to have my back no matter what.”
In addition to the close-knit relationships between Chesser and her teammates, she also clings to the support of family.
“Josh and Sandy (McElyea) are always reminding me…Say You Will,” Chesser said. “My biggest struggle is confidence, and it’s good to have family like this to keep encouraging me along with my teammates.”
With the fan club of the Warner Eagles cheering loud and proud, there’s little doubt that Harlie Chesser will lead her family of teammates to a higher level anchored to their faith.
