Sallisaw’s Camdyn Johnson – Student Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Indian Capital Technology Center

“When you know it’s right, everything else will fall into place.”

These words ring true for Camdyn Johnson, a senior at Sallisaw High and how she’s found the keys to opening the doors to the future by taking part in the Health Career Certification program at Indian Capital Technology Center in Sallisaw.

“I was in a computer class and took a personality test where I matched up with something called occupational therapy. After doing some research, I discovered and knew that it was something that was right for me,” said Johnson, a member of the Sallisaw softball teams as well as the school’s FFA program. “This experience at ICTC gives me a good start for my future in the medical field with a hands-on learning opportunity.”

Leah Agent, now in her third year as the HCC program instructor on the Sallisaw campus, explained the curriculum along with much desired character traits required for a successful career.

“All of our students are interested in some type of health care. Our program at ICTC includes long term care in which participants can gain certifications as well as learn anatomy, physiology plus medical terminology,” said Hart. “The successful students like Camdyn will example through their efforts that they are dependable and respectful, someone who also displays empathy and patience.”

The one-year program at ICTC gives students the opportunity to build a solid foundation for a future in healthcare, including a real world experience to master their skills in clinical environments.

“We learned the required skills and med-terms through classroom practices with other students and then at the facility during clinicals we experienced what its like real world,” explained Johnson who will attend the University of Arkansas to continue her path toward a future in occupational therapy. “I really enjoy the chance to help the residents with any of their needs including getting adjusted and comfortable in their beds, using the restroom as well as helping patients by feeding them their meals and then charting the results.”

Hart says Camdyn does things the right way and takes the lead among her peers in extra effort campaigns as afternoon president of HOSA- Health Occupation Student Association.

“Camdyn took up money to buy flowers for the CNAs our students worked with during clinicals and then delivered the carnations to them as a show of appreciation. She also initiated the group’s effort to make Valentines for the residents at a local assisted living facility.”

Like other programs at ICTC that provide a  “learn by doing” experience, the HCC program offers students an opportunity for direct placement to work as a CNA (Certified Nurse’s Aide), as a home health aid or a hospice aide. A chance where, according to Hart, the Sallisaw senior seized the opportunity to hit a home run like she does while playing softball for the Black Diamonds.

“During her clinicals Camdyn, on her own, met with the director of nursing at the facility to create another learning experience by working with the occupational therapist on site that enriched her skills.”
