Heavener’s Fernando Villanueva – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Agent Mallory-Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services

By Chris Cox

From a very young age, Heavener sophomore Fernando Villanueva knew he’d be playing soccer.

“I started playing when I was three years old and I’m 16 now,” he says. “Growing up, when I was little, it was all I knew. My dad always played and that’s all I watched on TV. Ever since I was able to walk, I’ve been kicking around a soccer ball.”

Fernando’s dad, who is also named Fernando, is a big reason he still plays soccer today.

“He’s been a really big influence in my life when it comes to sports in general,” he says. “My dad was always my soccer coach since I was little until I got to high school. He helps me a lot with the mental side of the game and understanding what I’m supposed to be doing on the field.”

Villanueva, who is a midfielder for the Wolves, says this year he’s not too concerned with his individual numbers. He simply wants to do what he can to help the team.

“I know if I go out there and give 100% and encourage my teammates every game, that will help us do our best,” he says. “The sky is the limit with our team. We are just trying to go all the way and do the best we can. I don’t have too many personal goals. I’m just trying to focus on my team.”

Villanueva’s passion on the field is evident.

“My passion for the game comes out when I’m out there,” he says. “Otherwise, I’m a pretty laid-back guy off the field.”

Outside of soccer, Fernando is a part of the student council and National Honor Society. He is also the kicker and punter for Heavener’s football team. Villanueva believes being a dual sport athlete helps him be better in both sports.

“Football helps me with soccer by being tough,” he says. “When you’re out there in football, even as the kicker and punter, there are still times I have to tackle. Soccer helps me see the football field better. When I’m back punting, soccer has helped me read defenses better and know where to punt the ball to.”

Although he is just a sophomore, Villanueva is already starting to prepare for his future by enrolling in an automotive program at a technology center in Poteau.
