WESTVILLE YELLOWJACKETS
Coach: ED BAKER
3-7
OFFENSE
Replacing three starters in the line and finding depth at running back are on top of the to-do list for coach Ed Baker and his staff at Westville this summer and fall as the Yellowjackets begin their 100th season of football. “We need some young players to step up this summer,” said Baker. “We’ll also need some players who have been one-way for the most part to step in and go both ways this year.” The Yellowjackets do return quarterback Britton Jacob (5-11, 195, Sr.) who had seven touchdowns last year while carrying 73 times for 300 yards. “Britton has been part of our program since seventh grade. He lost his sophomore year due to an ACL injury but came back to become the starting QB midway through last year. He was voted a team captain last year and now as a senior, his leadership will be vitally important for us,” said Baker. Jacob will also have some backup at QB if needed in Adian Auffet (5-10, 155, Sr.) and Zeke Edmisten (6-1, 185, Sr.) both of whom are primarily wide receivers. Jadon White will return at running back as the leading ball carrier with 1120 rushing yards last year and 10 touchdowns. The second and third leading ball carriers are both gone so Baker will look to either Edmisten or Mason Cox (5-8,155, Jr.) to take up some of that slack. Montana Perez (5-5, 205, Jr.) will be the lone returning lineman for the ‘Jackets.
DEFENSE
As on offense, the coaching staff will quickly try to identify who will be the up-front guys in the 3-4 defense but the rest of the defense features experience. Edmisten is the leading return tackler from his outside linebacker spot with 80 stops last year, 14 of them for loss. White and Jacob will fill the inside linebacker spots while Auffet, Cox, who notched 54 tackles last year, and Avry Green (6-1, 150, Sr.) will roam the secondary. “We have good leadership in our seniors. We need to stay healthy and have some success early and then build on that while developing some depth in the secondary, wide receiver and running back,” said Baker. One of those Baker hopes might step up is sophomore Brennon Gatewood who can play tight end or wide receiver on offense and linebacker on defense.
