LEADING WITH SPIRIT AND UNITY THE VIAN WAY
Cheerleading isn’t just about pompoms and chants; it’s about leadership, teamwork and unwavering support for your school. The Vian cheer squad, under the guidance of head coach Jordan Taylor, exemplifies these qualities as they gear up for cheering on the Wolverines. Madison Ross, one of the team’s co-captains, shines as one of the standout leaders. Her dedication and passion have made her an asset to the squad.
The squad’s development has been remarkable. “Over the summer, our athletes came to weight training days, tumbling days, and practices to work on the strength and skills needed to compete,” Taylor said. “These efforts have led to enhanced skills and confidence, both individually and collectively.”
As for their goals, the primary objective this season is to master the art of working the crowd, an essential skill that will serve them well during the season. “Our goal for football and basketball sideline cheer is to learn to work the crowd to help us get ready for our Game Day competition.”
Building cohesion and spirit among the squad is no easy task, but coach Taylor and her team have mastered it. “We build each other up by mat talking, use team bonding activities, events, and dinners, and have positive attitudes.”
This year’s squad is notably young, with seven seniors graduating last season. “We have moved people around in stunts and worked on more elite stunts and tumbling skills to prepare our team to return to the competitive state competition,” Taylor said.
For aspiring cheerleaders, coach Taylor has some valuable advice: “Step out of your comfort zone and be willing to try new things!”
