Sequoyah Tahlequah’s Talen Gann – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Tommy Nix Auto Group

Talen Gann, a standout on the basketball court from Tahlequah Sequoyah High School, shares insights into his journey, shaped by influential figures, unwavering support and a passion for the game.

Talen reflects on the impact of Coach Arlow Jumper, a mentor from Tahlequah, who served as his boxing and agility coach. “He taught me the importance of having a strong mindset, staying focused on my goals and gaining my confidence on and off the court.”

The camaraderie among teammates becomes a cornerstone of Talen’s basketball experience, with a nod to the diverse array of players who’ve left a mark on him. “There’s so many teammates I want to mention that has supported me and that I admire from Sequoyah, Kansas, Oaks, Tahlequah, Okay, Stilwell, Jenks, Muskogee and El Reno,” he acknowledges. The bond forged through shared victories and challenges becomes a testament to the strength of the basketball community.

Beyond the court, Talen finds inspiration in Mr. Bryant, his favorite teacher from Grand View Elementary School. “He was always positive, supportive and encouraging,” he said. “I felt like I could talk to him about anything.”

The lessons learned on the court echo into daily life for Talen. “It has taught me that nothing is ever given to you in life. Everything you want to be great at in life requires hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, and focus.”

Amid the many memories, one stands out vividly for Talen—the 1st Annual Sequoyah Invitational Tournament: “My favorite memory is playing in the 1st Annual Sequoyah Invitational Tournament with teams from across the nation representing many different tribes. Basketball is more than a sport; it’s medicine, and the atmosphere in the gym was so energetic, and I loved the way all the schools showed support for each other and brought the Native community together.”

Looking ahead, Talen articulates both team and personal aspirations for the upcoming season. “As a team, we want to bring the Gold Ball back to Sequoyah and our fans,” he said. “My personal accomplishment would be to end my season with a basketball scholarship to play at the next level.”

As Talen’s high school journey approaches its final chapters, the next part takes shape in his post-graduation plans. “I plan on playing basketball at the next level while studying engineering.”
