Abby Gourd
Porter High School
Porter High School’s Abby Gourd is a member of the track team and competes in the 800 and the mile run. As a distance runner, Gourd understands the importance of staying the course and finishing the race. Which is why academics are so important to Gourd.
Also a member of the FFA chapter at PHS, Gourd said some of her favorite memories have come from FFA events around the state.
“My favorite subject in school is math and my favorite teacher is the ag teacher Mr. Criner. Mr. Criner has taught me so much about agriculture, life, and how to compete, some of my favorite memories from school are on ag trips with him,” said Gourd.
Gourd attends Huntington Learning Center to help improve on test scores and prepare her for life after high school.
“At Huntington I enjoy the one-on-one learning and the specific focus on one topic,” said Gourd. “After I graduate, I want to go to college or join the military.”
In addition to track and FFA, Gourd also competes in powerlifting for Porter High, and she’s excited to see what she can accomplish.
“I like that Porter is a small school, so we are all together in many different activities and sports. My teammates are all super supportive and fun to be around. This season I’m most looking forward to running the mile and going to my first powerlifting competition,” said Gourd.
Away from school, FFA, and sports you can usually find Gourd doing something most of her peers only read about.
“In my free time I like to hang out with my family and shoot cowboy action, a shooting sport where you only shoot pre-1900’s guns,” said Gourd.
