Jersey Retzloff, a formidable force on the basketball court at Tahlequah High School, has woven a story of passion for sports and unwavering dedication to her growth as a person. Growing up in a family steeped in athleticism, Jersey found inspiration within her own household. “What inspired me to play sports was my family,” she said. “Growing up in a family that was full of athletes, I knew that was something that I also wanted to be a part of, and it gives such opportunities to grow closer with my family every day.”
In the realm of basketball, Jersey looks up to Shane Battier for his impressive career and similar playing style. Additionally, her father, a constant source of support and guidance, stands as a role model. “Someone more close to me that I would also say that I look up to would be my dad,” she acknowledged. “He is always there to give me tips to make me better, and I could not thank him enough for it.”
Balancing academics and athletics is no small feat, but for Jersey, prioritizing academics as the foundation for her future has been crucial. “In my mind, I’ve told myself that my grades can take me anywhere that I want to go, so that has driven me to focus on the student aspect first before anything,” she emphasized.
A standout moment in Jersey’s high school sports career was playing in the state tournament last year. The magnitude of the event left an indelible mark, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Being part of a team has significantly influenced Jersey’s growth in more ways than one: “Being a part of a team has influenced my character growth by understanding that everyone works in different ways. You have to come together and figure it out how to work through it. Once you figure out the differences, you can work toward your main goal.”
Coach David Qualls plays a pivotal role in Jersey’s development as a player. His unwavering support and encouragement to step out of her comfort zone have been instrumental in her growth as a teammate and athlete.
Jersey will continue to make an impact on the court this season with the Tahlequah Lady Tigers.
