Hunter Self, a formidable athlete from Stigler High School, is dedicated to both academics and sports, with a background deeply rooted in the love for basketball since his early years. Starting out at Whitefield, a K-8th grade school, Hunter’s basketball journey began to flourish, culminating in winning the ORES State Championship during his 7th-grade year.
For Hunter, the inspiration to play basketball was a natural progression from being surrounded by sports. “I have always been around sports and played sports, so I started taking a love for basketball ever since I was little,” he shared. Witnessing older kids play ignited a desire to emulate their skills and surpass them, motivating Hunter to embark on his basketball journey.
Over the years, Hunter’s admiration for athletes evolved, but one constant has been his affinity for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “I’ve always been a big OKC fan, and I love to watch Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He is so crafty and smooth; I try to model some parts of my game after him.”
Balancing academics and sports are a priority for Hunter, with academics taking precedence. “Academics always come first. I have to make good grades in order to play basketball. Once I complete my schoolwork, then I can work on my craft,” he emphasized.
Challenges have been a part of Hunter’s sports odyssey, with overcoming doubt and managing emotions proving to be significant hurdles. “Being able to overcome doubt or anger, being able to keep my cool or stay calm, whether it be in practices or a game, is a big challenge,” he acknowledged.
Being part of a team has contributed immensely to Hunter’s personal growth and character development. “Being part of a team has definitely made me focus on winning as opposed to glory for myself,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Hunter envisions a future where he can continue his involvement in the game: “After I graduate, I want to go to school to become a coach. I love the game and have a great knowledge of it, so I would like to continue to pass it on to other people who love the game as much as I do.”
