Courses

The M.A. in Sport Management and Administration degree will prepare you for a variety of careers within the sporting industry. Whether you want to work as an administrator, program director, or in events and marketing, you will have a firm understanding of social issues, communications, management, law and more as they apply to athletics. Keep reading to learn more about what is covered in each course of this 36-credit-hour program.

SOCIAL ISSUES IN SPORT

Credit hours: 3
This survey course examines social issues in sport known to various social groups and countries. Study is given to the cultural and historical issues as they impact international sporting events. Particular areas of interest are youth sport programs, violence, racism, religion and gender issues. This course will examine current events and trends related to the future of sport in North America.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Credit hours: 3
This course examines organizational communication theory and process. Special emphasis is given to common and special problems associated with interpersonal and intergroup communication affecting decision making and operations.

ETHICS IN SPORT MANAGEMENT

Credit hours: 3
This course is designed to explore an individual moral compass. Various ethical decision-making models will be examined. Analysis of ethical issues in contemporary sports will help develop decision-making abilities of Sport Managers.

PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS: REVENUE GENERATION

Credit hours: 3
This course is designed to help students develop professional connections with a wide variety of sport organizations.  The student will choose between a travel option to meet with officials from professional, community and collegiate organizations or participate in an Internship/Mentorship relationship to explore and develop skills in revenue generation.  This course provides a “hands on” experience in revenue generation.  The student will see the economic impact of sport.

MEDIA PRODUCTION FOR SPORT MANAGERS

Credit hours: 3
This course prepares students in all aspects of producing sports-related media in video and print formats and disseminating the productions through broadcast and online channels. Students will develop a concept and see it through to production followed by post-production activities including non-linear video editing, desktop publishing and web authoring via a content management system (CMS). Students will also practice skills related to writing and broadcasting sports information.

SPORT MARKETING

Credit hours: 3
This course is designed to advance the sport management student’s knowledge in marketing of sport and exercise. Emphasis is placed on marketing theories and principles. Additionally, focus will be placed on practices for developing, implementing, and managing marketing strategies for exercise and sport programs.

SPORT FINANCE

Credit hours: 3
This course is designed to provide the sport manager the skills necessary to fundraise, manage and develop a budget as well as use key financial concepts to obtain the data to ensure business success.

SPORT FACILITY PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

Credit hours: 3
This course introduces students to designing and construction of a comprehensive sport facility. Emphasis will be placed on managing a multi-dimensional sport facility that includes: physical education, athletics, recreation, health/fitness, and aquatics.

SPORT ORGANIZATION, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

Credit hours: 3
This course examines various organizational structures and leadership styles. The student will also review leadership roles, management techniques and practices in the operations of sport organizations including sport business and traditional athletic settings.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

Credit hours: 3
The focus of this course is to examine the functional areas of human resource management including acquisition and placement, job analysis and design, training and development, performance management, and rewarding of human resources. Extensive reading, writing, group discussions, and case studies are utilized.

SPORT LAW

Credit hours: 3
This course presents the basics of the legal system, its terminology, and principles as applied to professional, amateur and recreational sports. Emphasis is placed on identifying and analyzing legal issues, the ramifications of those issues, risk management and limiting the liability of sport organizations. The concepts of tort law, constitutional, and statutory law are discussed.

SPORT GOVERNANCE AND COMPLIANCE

Credit hours: 3
This course is an overview of the organizations that govern sport. Organizations to be included in the discussion are High School athletic associations, NCAA, and the USOC. The course will emphasize organizational and policy development as well as ethical decision making.

Meet our SNU Faculty

Dr. Sylvia Goodman

Program Director

Upon completing my Masters degree, I began my professional career at Eastern Nazarene College where I served as a faculty member and Head Athletic Trainer for 20 years.  My service experience includes working as an athletic trainer for the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, the Pan Am Games, the Olympic Games, the US Figure Skating Championships and the Boston Marathon.  I also served for many years as a Drug Control Officer for USADA and WADA.  These experiences have provided great insight into national and international sporting events.

While living in the Boston area, I completed my doctorate at Boston University. Since coming to SNU in 2001, I have served as a faculty member, Athletic Training program director, Department Chair, Dean and now as Chair of Graduate Programs in Kinesiology which include the Master of Arts in Sport Management and Administration and the Master of Science in Exercise Science.

Dr. Loren McElroy

Graduate & Professional Studies in Kinesiology

Loren graduated from SNU with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2011. She completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Northwestern University (Chicago, IL). Loren has 7 years of experience as a Physical Therapist in outpatient orthopedic clinics and specializes in manual therapy treatment. In 2016, she returned to Bethany, OK and to SNU as an assistant professor in Kinesiology.

Since then, she has continued to work part-time in rural settings and orthopedic clinics in the Metro. She is the owner of Andiamo Physical Therapy, PLLC, a private part-time PT practice. Loren is  the Program Director for the Physical Therapist Assistant program and is pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Leadership (Ed.D) at SNU.

Dr. Shayln Hooten

Graduate & Professional Studies in Kinesiology 

After living on campus for four years as an undergraduate kinesiology student here at SNU, Shalyn began her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree and graduated in May of 2016. Shalyn joined the SNU Professional Studies department in 2020 as the Title III PTA Clinical Education Coordinator.

Prior to joining the SNU family, Shalyn worked with patients at an outpatient physical therapy clinic. She continues to treat patients in the clinic for a few hours a week. She specializes in orthopedic and manual physical therapy. Shalyn has been an active member of the APTA and OPTA since 2016. She  also enjoyed being a clinical instructor for several students over the last 5 years.

Enrolling at SNU is a simple process. With rolling start dates, there’s no need to wait months at a time to begin your educational journey. Once you have earned your bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, take the following steps:

Step 1. Apply online at degrees.snu.edu/apply

Step 2. Complete your FAFSA at fafsa.gov using school code 003149

Step 3. Send official transcripts to SNU at pgsadmissions@snu.edu or ATTN: SNU PGS Admissions, Southern Nazarene University, 6729 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.

 

You will be contacted regarding any supporting materials we may need. Upon acceptance, your student success advisor will help you enroll and prepare for success as an adult student at SNU.
