Checotah Wildcats 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented By Cross Telephone

Coach: ZAC ROSS

3-7

OFFENSE

While last season did not go the way they had hoped, the Wildcats enter this new season with excitement and a clean slate. Fourth-year head coach, Zac Ross says that his team has been putting in the time during the offseason and he is ready to see what they can do when they hit the field in the fall. “We are excited about this season,” Ross said. “Our kids have been working hard in the weight room and we have a lot of returning starters.” Returning at quarterback will be Jacob Jones (6-3, 190, Sr.), who threw for 1,460 yards and fourteen touchdowns last season. Elijah Thomas (6-2, 185, Jr.) and Jaydin Bray (6-0, 205, Sr.) will look to haul in passes from Jones this season at wide receiver. Last season, they combined for 79 receptions for 1,390 yards and thirteen touchdowns. Maintaining things on the offensive line will be left guard Jonah Marshall (6-0, 300, Sr.), right guard Reign Westbrook (5-10, 230, Jr.), and center Dylan Robinson (5-10, 185, Jr.).

DEFENSE

The Wildcats bring back a number of guys that registered a lot of tackles last season and they will look to this experience to lead them this year. Nathan Gray (5-11, 220, Sr.) will return to middle linebacker. Last year he had 87 tackles and three sacks. Another linebacker coming back this season is Dallas Carter (5-8, 190, So.), who had 31 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble last year. Lane Elliot (5-8, 160, Sr.), Thomas, and Bray will be called on to lock things down in the secondary. They combined for 112 tackles, sixteen pass breakups, one interception, and one forced fumble. Marshall will be taking care of the dirty work up front. He registered 35 tackles and a sack last season and looks to have a bigger impact this season.
