Gore’s Journey Shells – Track Spotlight – Presented by Cross

Journey Shells is a senior at Gore High School, showcasing his talents across basketball, football and track. Reflecting on his motivation, Journey mentions positive representation. “What motivates me most is knowing I’m a role model to younger talents and also a role model to my younger brother. Seeing that I’m a role model pushes me to be better.”

When asked about his biggest influencers, Journey acknowledges his coaches. “I would have to say my coaches are my biggest influencers. They push me to be better and teach me new things.”

Journey also highlights the impact of specific teachers. “Mr. Reading Calvert and Mrs. Crystal Bliss have impacted my life. They inspire me, push me to achieve things I never thought possible, and helped me see the world in a whole new way. They’re like guides on the epic journey of learning.”

Describing what it takes to succeed in sports, Journey emphasizes “dedication, hard work, and a never-give-up attitude.” He also noted the importance of practice and having a supportive team and coach.

Reflecting on his sports career, Journey talked about watching his work come full circle. “The biggest highlight is being able to see the hard work and improvement play into sports.”

When it comes to rivals, Journey mentions Porum. “The opponent I like beating is Porum when it comes to basketball. Beating some of your friends is one of the best things. You have bragging rights and those memories.”

In practice, Journey enjoys the competition with teammates like Hunter McGee in football and Bryon McDuffie in basketball, praising their energy and dedication.

Regarding team dynamics, Journey feels fortunate: “I feel like the culture our coach has instilled in us has us always hyping up our teammates and picking each other up when we fall and praising each other’s efforts.”

Beyond sports, Journey is involved in gifted and talented program and plans to pursue a business degree while continuing to play sports at the next level after high school. Journey proudly represents his school and community, acknowledging the role model he has become for younger students. “I wear it like a badge of honor.”
