Keota Lions Football Preview – Presented By First National Bank

Coach: ERIC HENRY

9-3

OFFENSE

After advancing to the Class B state quarterfinals in 2022, the Keota Lions return a well-seasoned group of seniors with the goal of making further playoff inroads in 2023. That group is led by running back David Davis (6-0, 160, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 nominee. His 2011 rushing yards last season put him over 3800 yards career yards at Keota while his 32 touchdowns helped the Lions average 47 points a game in 2022. “David is a hard runner that won’t shy away from contact and can bust a game play at any time. He’s the kind of player you want to give the ball to 25 or more times a game,” said coach Eric Henry. Tight end Mason Edwards (6-2, 220, Sr.) also returns to lead the way in blocking for Davis or snagging passes with nearly 30 receptions and 800 yards in receptions over the past two years. Gunner Hill (6-2, 215, Sr.) will also offer a large target at wideout after totaling 181 yards receiving yards last year. The line will also be solid with the return of center Kale Johnson (6-4, 285, Jr.) and guard Garrett Doss (5-11, 225, Sr.). Joining Davis in the backfield as a running back will be Kayden Decker (5-9, 150, Jr.) who had nearly 500 yards in 2022. It appears that Beau McKenzie (5-11, 170, Jr.) may step into the quarterbacking spot this year.

DEFENSE

Davis will also lead the way on defense for the Lions as the leading returning tackler with 72 last year from his linebacking spot. Also at linebacker and close behind with 70 tackles, was McKenzie. Doss is back as the anchor of the line and Hill and James Weece (5-9, 150, Sr.) who combined for eight interceptions last year will be in charge of the secondary in Henry’s 3-3 defense. “With the senior group we have returning, we’ll have game time experience, leadership and the drive to work hard and get better as a team throughout the year,” said Henry.
