Jaysa Lester’s journey at Keota High School is not just a tale of hoops and victories; it’s a story woven with dedication, inspiration and a love for both academics and basketball.
From grade school to high school, Jaysa’s passion for basketball has been a constant. “I have played basketball ever since I was in grade school, and I have always loved school and learning new things!”
Behind every young athlete’s journey, there’s often a source of inspiration, and for Jaysa, it’s her mom: “My mom truly inspired me to start playing sports; she’s always been my biggest supporter.”
In the realm of professional athletes, Jaysa looks up to Caitlin Clark, a standout player for Iowa. “I really look up to her because she always had a good attitude,” Jaysa noted, recognizing the importance of a positive mindset in the face of challenges.
Navigating the dual demands of academics and athletics can be a delicate balance, but Jaysa approaches it with a focused mindset: “I just always try to get as much work done as I can and try to focus on one thing at a time.”
Challenges, an inevitable part of any sports journey, have tested Jaysa’s focus. “One challenge is just trying to stay focused and not let anything else in my life get in the way,” she said. Her solution? Living in the moment and taking each day one step at a time.
Being part of a team is a transformative experience, offering both challenges and rewards. “Being a part of a team has given me some great friendships,” Jaysa reflected, appreciating the camaraderie that basketball has brought into her life.
Behind every successful athlete, there’s often a guiding coach, and for Jaysa, coach Moody Smith plays a significant role. “Coach Smith has always given me a positive outlook not just on basketball, but on life.”
As Jaysa looks beyond high school, her plans are ambitious yet grounded. “I plan to attend Carl Albert State College and become a teacher,” she said, indicating a future that combines her love for learning and a desire to inspire others.
