The Muskogee girls claimed the team title and the boys team won second place in the Booker T. Washington Invitational last Friday.
With gold medal finishes in the two relays (4×100/4×200) and a third place time in the 4×400 the Roughers were too fast for the other girls teams. The foursome of Malaysia Burton, Kaitlynn McGee, Jakayla Swanson and Rakiya Lang raced past the field for the 4×100 with a winning time of 49.97 while the quartet of Deriayah Lee, Swanson, Lang and Aniya Thomas stopped the clock at 1:47.47 to win gold in the 4x200m relay. Avery Sayre teamed with Diamond Lewis, Goldyn Johnson and Zhyan Mayes to capture the bronze in the 4×400 relay.
Altogether the Roughers captured first place in 6 events including defending 300m hurdles state champion Lee sweeping gold in the 100m and 300m events while Swanson was first to the tape in the 100m dash with a time of 12.48 just ahead of McGee in second with Lang finishing fourth. Swanson and Lang earned more hardware with a second and third place performance in the 200m with Bianca McVay claiming fourth place in the 400m run. Kourtland Tate won the gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 34’-9” while Antonia Baker who finished third. Eleesha Lee added to the point total with a fifth place toss in the discus.
Altogether Muskogee totaled 146 points while Bartlesville and Claremore finished second and third respectively.
In the boys competition, the Roughers won first place in six events as they sprinted to gold in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays while the 4×400 foursome finished in sixth place. Jayden Swanson, Kayden McGee, Jayden Bell and RayeSean Ellis stopped the watch with the fastest time 43.40 in the 4×100 while Swanson, Jarin Riggs-Brown, McGee and Ellis with a time of 1:32.64 claimed the 4x200m gold medal points. Jeremiah Wright, Joshua Vienna, Jacinto Miller and Adrian Billingsley gave Muskogee added points in the 4×400 event. Ayden Kemp placed first in the 300m hurdles with a time of 42.82 while teammate Edward James finished third. Ellis finished third in the 100m dash while Swanson was third in the 200m event. Candon West earned points in the 3200m run with a fourth place finish. In the field events, Riggs-Brown won the long jump with a leap of 21’3.5” while teammates Ondraye Beasley and Michael Puckett finished third and fifth respectively. Riggs-Brown added more points with a sixth place leap in the high jump. Vernon Pepiakatah and O’Shea Stevenson each won gold and silver by trading places on the medal stand as Pepiakatah won the shot put with a throw of 45’7” and Stevenson with a 128’6” throw claimed first place in the discus competition.
Muskogee scored 128 points for the runner-up finish behind the host team, Booker T. Washington scoring 134 points while Thomas Edison was third.
The two Muskogee teams will compete against the talented field in Tahlequah on Friday.
