Muskogee’s Alexandra Locke – Dance Spotlight – Presented by Excel Therapy

Alexandra Locke has always been an avid dancer, but she’s experiencing her first go round as a member of the dance team at Muskogee High School.

Locke, a junior, started dancing at the age of three and her favorite thing about being on the dance team is getting to learn and perform new dances all the time.

She leans on her teammates when she needs advice.

“I’ve known most of my teammates since elementary school and it’s been really nice reconnecting through something we all love to do,” Locke said. “To me, my teammates are the girls I go to for advice in the locker room, the people I wave at in the hallways, and the people I laugh with on the sidelines before games. We can always count on each other and I think that really shows through in our team.”

Locke is most experienced in jazz or lyrical-styled dances. She is continuing to develop further since joining the dance team.

“I really excel at jazz or lyrical style dances. I don’t have much experience with pom or hip hop, so it’s been challenging for me to adjust to those styles that are newer to me, but I have loved having the opportunity to grow as a dancer and expand my abilities every day on the team,” said Locke, who has plans to further her dance career on a collegiate pom team, as well as study biomedical engineering.

“Alexandra is a huge asset to the Muskogee Dance Team, not only because of her unique skill set, but also because she is an outstanding leader on our team,” Muskogee coach Kyah Fields said. “She often ventures out of her comfort zone and pushes herself and her team to greater heights.”

Her favorite thing about being a student-athlete at Muskogee is the community of student-athletes that exist. She says there’s mutual respect and support between teams and it’s really nice to be a part of a group like that.

During her free time and outside of dancing, Locke enjoys playing tennis, acting and reading.

“I’ve always loved performing, and acting has been another outlet that I’ve really fallen in love with the last couple of years,” she said.
