MADISON GRAYSON
Muskogee
As a student, Madison Grayson has been close to the action and excitement of high school sports. Thanks to the opportunity available while enrolled in the sports medicine program at Indian Capital Technology Center in Muskogee, the 2024 senior at Muskogee High School is finding her chance to be part of the game.
“I’ve been involved of working games as a video producer on RougherTV for four years. At the same time, I was watching the sidelines to see what happened whenever a player got hurt and the student trainers would try to help get him back in the game,” explained Madison. “I’ve always been interested in the medical field but wasn’t sure if I wanted to go into nursing, pediatrics or physical therapy. I like the atmosphere around sports and thought this sports medicine program at ICTC would be an interesting and exciting program opportunity for me find the answers to my questions surrounding my future.”
A one-year program for high school juniors and seniors, the sports medicine curriculum is focused on athletic training, fitness and physical therapy skills. By the end of the course, students are well versed in athletic injury and the corresponding anatomy and physiology.
Meagan Caldwell, the program’s instructor at the ICTC-Muskogee campus for 11 years, enjoys watching students like Madison find success and pathways to their future.
“From the start, Madison was intrigued by what this class would offer. She’s been very inquisitive and learned a lot,” explained Caldwell. “She follows through on all of her assignments to the end and she’s become a great peer for her classmates.”
Madison, like many of the students enjoys the opportunity to learn by doing.
“The curriculum is hands-on and I personally learn better that way rather than sitting in a traditional classroom,” said Madison. “Learning how to spell and the meaning of all of the medical terminology is a must know. Two words look almost the same in how they’re spelled but have totally different meanings and how you respond to the use of each.”
Sports medicine, like other programs available through ICTC inspires students to gain valuable skills for life and simultaneously inspire a competitive spirit to enrich their personal and professional futures.
“Because of my involvement in the sports medicine program at ICTC, I’ve realized that I really want to go to college and be ready to get in the game on a day-to-day basis,” Madison said with a voice of optimism and smile of excitement. “It helped me find a pathway to a professional career. The certifications and real life experiences are priceless and give me a direction of achieving success in life.”
