Porter Pirates 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Kilgore Meat Processing Plant

PORTER PIRATES

Coach: RICK LANG

3-6

OFFENSE

The Pirate’s ship is preparing to sail into competitive waters with a new captain as veteran coach Rick Lang takes the wheel and confident of this year’s talent level as eight starters return on offense. “We’re a spread attack that wants to go uptempo and keep pressure on our opponents,” said Lang. “Last year this group was very young, and the game time experience gained along with their skill set will give us a chance to move the ball.”

Leading the charge with be quarterback Bradyn Israel (6-4, 225, Jr.), a VYPE Top 100 candidate who has the tools to make the Pirates offense go. “Bradyn was a state qualifier in the discus last spring,” said Lang, “and his athleticism and strength creates a dual threat signal caller who can go deep on pass routes but also beat you with his legs running the ball.” There’s a big reason for Lang to smile when watching the battles in the trench where Miguel Chavez (6-5, 285, Jr.), a VYPE Top 100 nominee, stands tall against the opposition.

“His motor runs at full speed on every snap,” said Lang. “Miguel knows how to use his size and strength as leverage on both sides of the ball.” Easton Bobbitt (6-0, 235, Jr.) will compliment Chavez on the offensive front. Adding to the offensive skills of the Pirates will be Billey Wiseley (5-9, 150, Sr.) who will get touches as running back as well as being a sure handed receiver in space along with Dominic Springsted (6-1, 160, So.), Logan Roberts (6-0, 160, Sr.) and Braydon Nelson (6-2, 160, Jr.). “Altogether as a group, the receivers will go up in a crowd and make catches,” Lang said.

DEFENSE

The 4-2-5 alignment is a solid fit for the Pirates list of playmakers where Chavez will be a challenge for the Porter opponents. “His overall strength and mobility let’s Miguel come off the snap in a hurry. He’ll require plenty of attention coming off the end,” said the new Porter mentor. Bobbitt will seal the opposite end and allow the linebacker group to pursue the football led by Luke Brewer (5-11, 165, Sr.), who Lang points out as a player to watch along with Logan Roberts and Adrian Valdez (5-10, 175, So.). The secondary has quickness and a strike force approach led by Billey Wiseley at safety while cornerbacks Braydon Nelson, Conner Strowick (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Dominic Springsted, a player that Lang identified as someone who looks for contact and will fight for possession in pass coverage.

“This is a group of hard-working kids that are willing to do the little things right to be successful,” said Lang.
