Porum Panthers 2023 Girls Basketball Preview Presented by CROSS

Courtney Pease

GIRLS

Coach: Bobbie Wheat

22-23 Record: 14-8

With what she calls a good mix of seniors and sophomores, Bobbie Wheat starts her 20th season as the head coach of the Panthers. The team will revolve around senior Courtney Pease (5-4) a VYPE TOP 100 pick this year who averaged 12.9 points a game last year while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field.” Courtney is an all-around athlete in every spot. She’s very quick and always knows where the ball is. Often times she makes a steal with her quickness before the opponent realizes they don’t have the ball anymore,” said Wheat.

“She’s completely capable of taking over a game and is a complete player.” Another returning player is Kylie Smith (5-7, Sr.) who averaged just over 8 points a game in 2022. “Kylie is good at reading situations and always seems to come up with a steal, rebound or bucket at crucial times,” said Wheat. Senior Cameren Terrell returns this season after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the first game last season. “Sometimes players that get hurt shy away from the team, but Cameren was there for every practice and every game cheering and encouraging her teammates with a smile on her face despite her injury.” Wheat also had kind words for three of her sophomore players: Leia Johnson (5-8), Adysen Dishman (5-10) and Mesa Coulston (5-10). “Each brings a different talent to the game,” said Wheat. “Addy (Dishman) has good size and generally outsizes whoever she is guarding. Mesa is a finesse player with a quick first step that can take it to the bucket and she’s a good 3-point shooter as well. Leia is a shot blocking, rebounding machine. She has a knack for getting opponents in foul trouble and the rougher the game, the better she scores.” The Panthers have a couple of experienced post players in seniors Zoe Davis (5-8) and Kolby Pevehouse (5-8). Other sophomores that will be seeking to break into the lineup are Jaelyn Smith (5-4), Debo Mann (5-8), and Karmyn Terrell (5-9). Freshmen Hydee Purdom (5-7), Ashlyn Crowder (5-6) and Nora Barnes (5-8) will be looking to catch the veteran coach’s attention.
