WOLVERINES EARN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

After two days of practice at sites in the Oklahoma City area, Vian’s FFA homesite evaluation team won the national championship during competition at the 69th National Land and Range Judging Contest. Competing against 850 FFA and 4-H students, the Vian quartet of Cobee Cook-Cobb, Cason Wright, Hallee Risley and Jathan Brockman captured the top honors.

Brockman placed third while Cook-Cobb finished in sixth place in the overall National individual rankings. The team is coached by Trent Trotter.

Members of the Vian FFA Chapter also won first-place honors in the State FFA Land Judging and the State FFA Home-Site Evaluation Career Development Event during the 2022 Oklahoma FFA Career Development Events at Oklahoma State University. Team members on the winning land team include Madison Ross, Kala Gibbins, Marshal Ross and Cobee Cook-Cobb. In individual rankings, Ross and Gibbins earned first and second overall, respectively. Team members on the winning Home-Site team included Hallee Risley, Autumn Richey, Jathan Brockman and Natalie Guthrie. In individual ranking, Risley earned high individual overall.

Cason Wright, Hailie Brake and Cobee Cook-Cobb of the Vian FFA chapter received the State FFA Degree, the highest degree of active membership awarded by the Oklahoma FFA Association. The honor is bestowed upon high school senior FFA members who have demonstrated outstanding supervised agricultural experience programs and leadership skills. Only 737 of the nearly 27,000 Oklahoma FFA members advanced through the Discovery, Greenhand and Chapter Degrees to earn the state honor this year. Cason Wright also received the Academic Excellence Award that was based on a cumulative GPA and ACT score and awarded to only 79 of the possible 737 candidates.

STATE CHAMPIONS IN SONG

In perfect pitch, the Vian High School Choral Competitive Ensemble won the Class 3A state championship. The Wolverine choir received all superior ratings and was presented a total of 14 medals. Vian senior Emily Foster, junior Gavin Stinnett and freshman Zayley Cheater all received superior ratings in solo competition. Other members of the championship choir include Xeefa Lor, Brooke Heflin, Katie Moore, Emily Cook-Cobb, Brianna Miller-Wildin and Kat Kosterlitzky. The Vian choir is coached by Christina Howard-Herriman.

Wells, who will now play at the college level with Eastern Oklahoma State College, was the standout on the softball fields earning All-State recognition in the Oklahoma Fastpitch and Slowpitch contest while Lackey, the Wolverine linebacker who will continue his football career Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, will play in the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State game in July.
