Vian Wolverines 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Vian Family Dental Clinic

VIAN WOLVERINES

Coach: GARY WILLIS

9-3

OFFENSE

The Vian Wolverines play what has to be one of the toughest schedules in the state. Last year seven of the 12 teams that Vian faced made the playoffs including one state champion (Washington) and a semi-finalist (Lincoln Christian). Despite that, they went two rounds deep into the playoffs themselves and they return seven offensive starters from that team. But the Wolverines find themselves a little short on experience. Sophomore Masyn Wright (6-0, 165), a VYPE Top 100 nominee. will step into the quarterbacking spot vacated by Diego Ramos. The youngster had a great freshman campaign at running back where he rushed for 1100 yards while splitting time with the graduated Desean Mays. “Masyn is a great athlete with good size and speed,” said head coach Gary Willis. “He’ll be the guy with the most touches and can play quarterback, running back or receiver.” A solid receiving corps will be led by tight end Peyton Johnson (6-2, 210, Jr.) along with Nathan Creasy (5-10, 160, Sr.) and Jacob Brannick (5-10, 165, Jr.) who had 560 receiving yards last year. Cash Collins (6-2, 200, Jr.) will be the main man on the offensive line.

DEFENSE

The Wolverine defense is anchored by another stellar sophomore and Top 100 nominee in Riley Ellis (5-8, 180) who had 90 tackles last year at linebacker. Wright, who had 85 tackles, will be back in the secondary. Also returning to the secondary will be Draighton Fletcher (5-7, 165, So.) who recorded 67 tackles last year as the Wolverines will run from their standard 3-4 set. Opposing offenses will be hard pressed to get past the Wolverine defensive front of Lane Jamison (5-8, 220, Sr.). Clay Clark (6-3, 275, Sr.) and Collins. Vian graduated a lot of talent but if the youngsters that stood out last year as freshmen continue to improve, the Wolverines should continue their impressive run of playoff appearances. They’ll get a quick barometer of where they stand as they open with defending state champ Washington followed by the always dangerous Eufaula and Lincoln Christian.
