Volleyball Spotlight – Alexis Rodriguez – Presented by Nissan of Muskogee

Muskogee junior Alexis Rodriguez has been making an impact this season for the Lady Roughers on the volleyball court. Coaches in Muskogee are impressed by Rodriguez on and off the court.  “Arod is one of the best middles in the area,” Rougher head coach TeAna Tramel said. “She is quick to the pins and has a work ethic like no other. She is a true leader on and off the court with the potential to play at the next level.”

For Rodriguez, success in volleyball isn’t just about talent, it’s about keeping a positive attitude and building confidence not only in yourself but your teammates as well.

“In order to be successful in volleyball I feel like you have to have a good attitude and a sense of confidence in yourself, your teammates and your coaches,” Rodriguez said.

One person that Rodriguez can thank for teaching her to always keep a positive attitude is her mom.

“I’ve always felt extremely inspired by my mom,” Rodriguez said. “She always manages to persevere and keep a good attitude, she likes to keep things real and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.”

As a junior Rodriguez is looked upon to provide leadership and set the tone for the squad.

“I think a good leader/teammate has a selfless attitude and wants what’s best for the team,” Rodriguez said. “Even if that means having to take the blame for something or doing things that may seem difficult.”

In her time at Muskogee Rodriguez has had her share of special moments. Last year as a sophomore Rodriguez and the Roughers played a great game against McAlester.

“That was the first time I ever remember being relaxed and excited on the court rather than stressed out,” Rodriguez said. “The student section was packed and it was so loud and energetic that it was one of the best games we played.”

After the game Rodriguez went with a group of friends to eat and celebrate and said she felt like she was getting the full high school experience.

As the season continues on Rodriguez has set some goals for herself on and off the court.

“My goal this year is to have a successful and fun season with my team, to continue making good grades in class, and to do more work with my new club that my friend Ella and I started.”

While Rodriguez is only a junior, she is beginning to plan ahead for her future, and consider her options after high school.

“My plans after high school aren’t super clear, but I would love to study psychology and sociology. It has always been my dream to attend an Ivy League.”
