Wagoner’s Abby Humphries – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Kevin Grover Buick

Throughout her life, Abby Humphries has been involved in a variety of sports and activities. She currently plays multiple sports at Wagoner High School and says that all of her sports require similar preparation.
“I play volleyball, golf, soccer, and I cheer at Wagoner,” she said. “It takes a lot of hours of practice and even getting help outside of school. Success in athletics is something that is earned not given.”

Abby is a senior at Wagoner, where she is also a member of the student council. Whenever she is not playing or practicing one of her sports, Abby enjoys being involved at her church and hanging out with her family and friends.

While she has put in a lot of work, Humphries says that there are a few other people that deserve credit for the person that she is today.

“My parents have been a huge impact on my life,” she said. They have always pushed me to be better than what I am and have shown me how to work hard. Also, one of my teachers, Mrs. Barnes, been influential in my life. She is always there to listen and give advice and she shows she really does love her students.”

Randi Pawpa, the head volleyball coach at Wagoner, knows that Abby is an all-around great athlete and person and says that she is an outstanding example for the underclassmen.

“Abby started last year as our libero,” coach Pawpa said. “Hopefully she’ll carry over all that experience from last year to this year. She’s a hard worker and she’s a vocal leader. I know she will take care of our back row for us. We have a lot of confidence in her and I think the other girls on the team can see that. She is also an excellent student in the classroom and she involved in about every activity in school. Abby hope to cheer at a major college, she is quite the tumbler and flier.”

When Humphries steps on the floor with her teammates, they are ready to face whoever is in front of them. But she has one opponent that she enjoys competing against the most.

“The Okay volleyball team is a great opponent,” she said. “They bring so much energy and they are a really good team.”
