“When you get to a certain age is when you start having a goalie,” she explains. “We didn’t have one so I just started playing it. I didn’t know anything about it but ever since then, that’s the only thing I’ve been playing.”
With a goal considerably larger than the keeper, playing goaltender in soccer requires a great deal of mental toughness because goalies are often put in incredibly difficult situations.
“Honestly, I think it’s probably one of the hardest spots,” she admits. “It can go from zero to 100 real quick and you have to just know what to do in every situation so you can react. I just try to keep my mind open. There’s some stuff when it comes to penalty kicks you can take into account like where the person taking the kick is looking or right when they plant their feet you might be able to tell where they’re going. It’s just a lot of quick decisions.”
Growing up playing goalie, Bethanny admired some of the high profile goalies like Hope Solo but she really credits her coaches with helping her become the goalie she is today.
“I had a goal coach named Alan Meuhlenweg,” she says. “He was really good and taught me a lot of the basics early on. My other coaches, Bobby Schaefer, Brandon Carr, and Chase Wooten, all taught me different things from the basics and mechanics, to how to push myself, and how to expect the best from myself.”
Being a senior, Moore has set some pretty high goals for herself and her team.
“For team goals, I’d like to make the playoffs again,” she says. “For my personal goals, I’d like to not get scored on…at all.”
Bethanny, who has played club “competitive” soccer for West Side Alliance and year-round for the past six years, is thankful for all the support she’s received throughout her soccer career, especially from her grandparent.
“My grandparents are at every practice and every game,” she says. “It doesn’t matter how far away it is, they are always there.”
Following high school, Bethanny has committed to play soccer at Oklahoma Wesleyan University and pursue a business degree. She is excited to be an Eagle.
