BOSTON WYBRANT
WAGONER HIGH SCHOOL
A talented athlete with a servant’s heart might be a good way to describe Wagoner senior Boston Wybrant. As a defensive back and wide receiver, Boston has been a part of two state championship football teams in his time as a Bulldog and is also a valuable utility player on the baseball team.
“I can’t say enough good things about this young man,” said baseball coach Johnny Hutchens. “He’s a team captain, a three-year starter and really sets the tone for us. He’s like having a coach on the field and his versatility is also great benefit for our team.”
While being a football title team has been great, Boston says he favors baseball a little more.
“I’ve been playing baseball since I was four or five so I guess that has something to do with it but I just like the depth that baseball has. It’s a big team sport and you have to be locked in all the time whether you’re on the starting nine or on the bench. Everyone has a role they can fulfill.”
While most athletes have some person that is a key role model for them, Boston, who grew up in Texas, cites a travel ball team he was on as impacting him.
“Our travel team, the Copperas Cove Astros, meant the world to me and really ignited my love for baseball. When I left, they autographed a baseball and gave it to me and when I get down on baseball, I’ll pull that baseball out and remember why I love this game.”
But there’s another aspect to Boston Wybrant that you pick up on as you talk to him about being a senior leader.
“I believe in transparency and serving others as a leader as I serve my Lord and Savior and show them how a team should be led. Not asking my teammates to do something I wouldn’t do is a big deal for me,” said Boston who is on student council, National Honor Society, a leader in FCA and a leader in his church youth group. “While being a part of championship football teams is certainly a highlight for me, the hard work and dedication of this baseball team to try and turn this program around has also meant a lot to me.”
Boston was nominated to attend West Point but was declined for medical reasons, so he plans to attend UCO next fall and get involved in ROTC to re-apply to West Point “so I can serve my country.”
When he departs Wagoner later this spring, Boston Wybrant says he would like to be remembered as the hardest worker on the team and a servant to his teammates.
