Wagoner’s Zoie Griffin Athlete Spotlight Presented by Arkansas Verdigris Valley Health Centers

ZOIE GRIFFIN

WAGONER HIGH SCHOOL

Wagoner High freshman Zoie Griffin is certainly making a name for herself in fast pitch softball this fall in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs. As Wagoner entered the playoffs, Zoie Eclipsed the 300-strikeout mark for the season with a 1.16 ERA while hitting .359 at the plate as she helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to their first regional championship in over a decade

“Coming in as a freshman, she’s pitched really well for us,” understated coach Brian Edwards. “She plays at a very high-levelthanks in part to all of the experience she has gained playing travel ball in the spring and summer. We’ll go as far this year as she’s able to take us.”

Coming out of middle school where her teams went 42-1 in two years, Zoie knew there would be adjustments to make when she got to high school.

“I knew that high school would be a faster paced game than I had seen but all my coaches along the way really helped me prepare so that transition has been pretty easy,” said Griffin who will also play basketball for the Bulldogs this winter.

Playing softball was predestined for Zoie and you might even say she was literally born into the game.

“My mom was the softball coach at Berryhill when I was born and she played in high school and college so it was pretty easy for me to get started and I actually played baseball with the guys at first but that didn’t last very long,” Zoie chuckled. “Mom started coaching our softball team and shortly after that I started playing travel ball as well.”

Even though her mom has played a big part in her softball history, Zoie says it’s her dad who is the motivator in her life.

“He really pushes me to be the best in everything I do,” she said.

Certainly, being where she is now has fulfilled a personal goal for Zoie, but she has her sights set higher.

“I want to be the first freshman to break school records whatever they are,” she laughed.

And she seems to be well on her way.
