BEGGS GOLDEN DEMONS
Coach: DAVID TENISON
7-5
OFFENSE
Since taking over the reigns at Beggs, coach David Tenison has compiled an impressive four-year 40-14 record while making the Class 2A playoffs every year. The 2023 season may require his finest coaching effort yet as the Golden Demons return some very talented skill players but are still looking for the pieces to complement them. University of Kansas commit and VYPE Top 100 pick Red Martel (5-10, 190, Sr.), will be the heart of the Beggs offense from his tailback spot. As a junior, Red raced for 1,905 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns while adding four additional scores while making 23 receptions for 311 yards.
“Red is a special talent,” said Tenison. “He has great speed and field vision that enable him to get through and around would-be tacklers.” Another Top 100 pick, Ryan Grayson (6-1, 175, Jr.) will be in charge at wide receiver. Grayson is already entertaining offers from Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado with more sure to follow in the next two years. Joining Grayson as a fleet-footed receiver is Louis Jupiter (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Jordan Wesley (5-7, 155, So.). The Demons will rely upon the continued maturation of Billy Ramsey (5-11, 175, Jr.) at quarterback who will step into the starter’s role in 2023. Graduation hit the Demons offense but there’s still size, athleticism and senior leadership in the trenches with Gunner Baker (5-10, 235, Sr.), Britten Porske (6-2, 285, Sr.) and Josh Felts (5-11, 300, Sr.). The Golden Demons will find added depth upfront with Isaac Taylor (6-0, 225, Jr.). “We’re starting from scratch on the o-line but we’re starting with athleticism and desire,” said Tenison.
DEFENSE
The 4-2-5 Demon defense was the source of one of the highlights of last year. After getting blown out by Rejoice Christian early in the season, the Beggs defense came back and limited Rejoice to just 28 points in a first-round playoff win. Red Martel, Ryan Grayson, and Louis Jupiter return from that defensive secondary unit with speed and skill to continue creating game changing turnovers. D.J. Strother (6-0, 235, Jr.) will be back in the middle at linebacker and will flanked by Carson Cooper (6-1, 185, So.) in the box while the defensive front will once make it hard for opponents to be productive with Isaac Taylor joining his brother, Aiden (6-3, 230, So.) at end while Martez Myles (6-3, 220, Jr.) and Kaden West (6-2, 215, Jr.) plug the middle gap. While the “next up” philosophy will be strongly tested this year at Beggs, Tenison has plenty of cause for optimism. “The athleticism is still present as well as our speed and strength,” said Tenison. “The newcomers to the starting lineup now just have to learn how to play the game.”
