Okemah’s Raven Deer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Red & White Grocery & Market

In the unfolding chapters of Raven Deer’s basketball journey at Okemah High School, her journey is marked by growth, friendships and a relentless pursuit of self-improvement. Reflecting on her coaching influences, Raven emphasizes the collective impact each coach has had on her development: “I cannot specifically say that I have a favorite coach during my playing time. I’ve grown with each coach I’ve had, and they have all made a huge impact on my game, regardless of whether they still coach me.”

Within the realm of teammates, Raven draws strength from a culture of mutual support. “I can say on the ball teams I’ve been on; we’ve always supported each other no matter what,” she said. “But I will have to say that I never really admired any specific person because we’re all still elevating.”

In the realm of education, a favorite teacher, Chauncey Goff, emerges as a pivotal figure. “He has helped me with countless things and is always making me be a better version of myself every day,” Raven said.

As the off-season unfolded, Raven prioritized mental fortitude, recognizing the pivotal role mindset plays in athletic performance. “Making sure not to have a bad mindset because I feel like anyone can play basketball, but it’s all in your head that can make or break you as a player Also trying to exceed my limitations.”

The lessons learned on the court extend seamlessly into daily life for Raven. “I have learned not to let the little mistakes that I make affect my whole life because there is always a way to come back from them and to be better,” Raven said. “I have to put in work and try harder.”

Cherishing memories etched in the fabric of her basketball journey, Raven recalls a poignant moment of vulnerability. “I cherish all of my memories, but when we lost our last game of the season my sophomore year, me and my at the time best friend were crying, and we hugged for the very first time. That just means a lot to me,” she shared, highlighting the emotional commitment to her teammates.

As the current season unfolds, Raven envisions team goals that transcend the scoreboard: “I just want for my team to accomplish making a bond that no one can break. That no matter what, we will always know that our team will have our backs on anything.”

Post high school, Raven Deer envisions a trajectory into the field of nursing, aspiring to one day become a sports physician.
