McCurtain Bulldogs Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Compassion Home Care

BOYS
Coach: Jason Ward
21-22 Record: 13-13

A strong core of returning senior players have things buzzing about the possibilities for the Bulldogs this season. “We’re very excited about this coming year,” said second-year coach Jason Ward. “We have a very strong older group with good team speed and good shooters.” Two of those senior leaders will be Braydan Ward (5-9) and Clayne Honeycutt (5-11). “Braydan has put in a lot of work to change his mind and body over the past two years and consistently tries to do whatever is needed for the team to succeed,” said the head coach. “Clayne will guard the opposition’s best player on most nights and can affect the game on both ends of the floor.” The guy with the target on him this year will be Luke Sandlin (5-11, Jr.). “Luke will be a tough matchup for opponents on most nights. He has great touch and can score on and off the ball. He has grown in both mind and body this off season and I believe he is ready to fill a leadership role on this team,” said Ward.

Ben Bond (6-0, Jr.) is another underclassman that McCurtain will count on this year. “He is a warrior in both sports and in the weight room. I believe his mentality will help him dominate the boards on both ends and he has built himself up by pushing himself for many hours in the weight room,” said Ward. A young freshman has also caught Ward’s eye this preseason in Angel Gomez. “This kid works hard in all that he does, and I believe he will be ready to make a statement in a game very soon.” Braydan Ward and Honeycutt will get lots of leadership help from Brandon Collins (6-0, Sr.) while juniors Kyven West and K.J. Wright should see lots of playing time as well. Look for that all important depth from sophomores Malaki Yearly, Korey Lovell, Jarrod Barrera and freshmen Jackson Blaylock, Ben Xiong and Maverick Dill.
