NSU’s Riverhawk Nation – Lawton McArthur’s Tre Currin

TRE CURRIN

Lawton MacArthur

Perseverance and determination might be two words that you could use to describe Northeastern State University tight end Tre Currin. When he graduated from Lawton MacArthur High School in 2018, the RiverHawk coaching staff at the time told Tre that he could be one of the pieces they needed to help the program get back on the winning track.

“I just decided that I wanted to be that guy to help turn things around even when the coaching staff changed after my freshman year. I’m just one of those guys that is determined to finish what I start,” said Currin.

Tre will finish his time as a football player this fall and graduate in December with a degree in Health and Physical Education. But the road to getting that done has been a roller coaster. First there was the coaching change after his freshman year. The following year he was hurt and played in just four games and then Covid wiped out the following season. He played the whole season in 2021 but then missed all last year due to injury which he says just fed his fire to leave it all out on the field this last year. Persevering through all of that, the one thing that has been a constant for Currin is family-both personally and on campus.

“My mom and sisters try to come to all of our home games, and I appreciate that. My football family is also important. If I know my people are with me, then I’m always with my people. There’s no other feeling I’d trade for being part of the family.”

That family feeling also extends to the faculty at NSU according to Currin.

“I could talk for days about how great my instructors and counselors have been. They’ve been there to help me stay on track, to be a part of my everyday life and by getting to know me. I give them a lot of credit for helping me graduate.”

Tre Currin is an outdoorsman and says that having fun on the Illinois River has been a big part of his time at Tahlequah as he discussed why he thinks NSU is the place to be for college.

“There’s always a helping hand on this campus whether it’s your professors, classmates, or dorm mates. It’s like your family away from home and that’s what I’ll take away from NSU along with my degree.”
