NSU’s Riverhawk Nation – Wauchula, Florida’s Johnny Jean

JOHNNY JEAN

Wauchula, Florida

Playing football in the MIAA conference as a member of the RiverHawks football team, Johnny Jean knows something about long road trips.  Seven hour bus rides just to get on the field and compete is only part of the journey that makes the Florida native happy to be at Northeastern State University.

“Its been crazy to think about how I found my way here to Tahlequah,” smiled the fifth year senior. “After playing in the Jayhawk conference at Garden City Community College, I was coming off setting out a season during the Covid year as a student at Oklahoma State University. I was in the transfer portal when coach called and invited me here and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity.”

In his first season at NSU, Jean earned MIAA honorable mention recognition as a defensive back while he discovered a place to call home on his way to completing his college degree.

“It’s a big family of people who want you to succeed, “ said the general studies major who will graduate in December. “Not only do the coaches care about me as person, but so do all of my professors. They want me to win, on the field and in life.”

It’s been a long way from Wauchula Florida to Tahlequah, but for Johnny and his wife, Alexis, who is a native Oklahoman, it’s a place that really feels like home.

“I love it because you can do so much here in Tahlequah. The outdoor hiking adventures on the hills are perfect for both of us to share time together along with my dog Shadow as I continue to chase my dream.”

Separated from his family in Florida that hasn’t been able to see him play in person while in college, Jean appreciates the coaching he’s experienced as a player and student.

“Coach Lucas and Coach Eckert check on me and the other players everyday. That same kind of attention is given in the classroom. Not only do I sit on the front two rows taking notes, but after class my instructors are always willing to give one on one assistance to help me achieve my degree. And in a game, when I can hear our fans calling my name, my adrenalin skyrockets to a higher level of performance.”

When asked why choose NSU, the ever-smiling Johnny Jean raised an eyebrow and quickly answered with confidence.

“Whatever career you choose, I’d tell you if you want it, then go get it.  And, Northeastern State University is the place where you can not only chase your dream but also find the road to happiness and success.”
